I have never been to Beirut but, like many people, I have seen a lot of photographs. Beirut has become a sort of symbol. To say “Beirut” is to invoke a long span of history and civilization in which multiple cultures used to co-exist. Although the pictures show a ruined city, the beauty and dignity of Beirut survive.
